The Department of Pathology faculty play a major role in the educational
mission of the Keck School of Medicine. The department offers graduate
programs and residency programs, as well contributes significantly
to the medical school curriculum. Pathology faculty teach medical
students more total hours than any other basic science department.
Residency
Program »
Fully approved training programs in anatomic and clinical pathology
are offered over a four- or five-year period. Most residents complete
an integrated AP/CP program. LAC+USC Medical center is the principal
teaching hospital and provides experience with a broad and diverse
spectrum of pathology. The program includes rotations at the USC
University Hospital and USC/Norris Cancer Hospital.
Medical
Student Teaching Program »
Pathology is the only discipline that can be classified
as both a basic and a clinical science. As such, it provides for
our medical students an indispensable bridge between the basic science
that forms a large part of the first two years of medical school
and the clinical relevance and application of this information that
is the foundation of the third and fourth years. The newly designed
curriculum will enhance the understanding and clinical relevance
of the basic sciences and improve the students' problem-solving
and independent study skills. It is based upon the use of small
cases and incorporating small group learning, directed self-study
and newer instructional technologies.
Graduate
Program »
The Department of Pathology offers a Ph.D. program in Pathobiology
focused on training students to do independent and creative research
in basic science and translational research in the areas of cellular
and molecular pathology. This training will provide the graduate
with credentials for positions in academic institutions, biotechnical
commercial enterprises, and consultantships for clinical and government
positions. A Masters program in Experimental and Molecular Pathology
provides the necessary theoretical and practical training to prepare
students for positions as senior research staff, senior technicians
in academic and industrial settings, or teachers in community colleges.
M.D./Ph.D.
Program »
The Keck School of Medicine offers an M.D./Ph.D. program, of which
the Ph.D. portion can be obtained through the Pathology Graduate
Program. This program is designed for medical students interested
in a career as both a clinician and basic scientist, focusing on
biomedical research in pathobiology.
Undergraduate
Summer Fellowship »
The Edmondson Summer Fellowship Program offers high school and college
students interested in careers in the health sciences, the opportunity
to spend eight weeks in pathology research and clinical laboratories.
A stipend is provided.
