Residency Program
LAC+USC Healthcare Network/Keck
School of Medicine of the University of Southern California/Veterans
Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System
Fully approved training programs in anatomic and clinical
pathology are offered over a four-year period. Recently, the
Pathology Residency Training Program at the Veterans Affairs
Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) underwent
a merger with the LAC+USC Healthcare Network/Keck School of
Medicine at the University of Southern California (LAC+USCHN)
that was approved by the Pathology RRC. Occasionally, residents
choose anatomic pathology alone but most complete an integrated
AP/CP program. Training is offered in autopsy pathology, surgical
pathology, oral pathology, dermatopathology, cytopathology,
forensic pathology, neuropathology, hematopathology, microbiology,
transfusion medicine, chemical pathology, toxicology, immunopathology,
neuropathology, molecular pathology, cytogenetics, laboratory
management, information science, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry,
immunofluorescence, and other specialty areas. Graded responsibility
is emphasized in all areas. LAC+USC Medical Center is the
principal teaching hospital and provides experience with a
broad and diverse spectrum of pathology. The residency program
includes rotations at the VAGLAHS, USC University Hospital
and Norris Cancer Hospital that complement the experience
at the Medical Center. In addition, as part of the core curriculum,
forensic pathology is also provided at the Los Angeles County
Coroner's Office. Fellowship positions are available in surgical
pathology, hematopathology, neuropathology, and cytopathology.
Postgraduate physicians actively participate in the teaching
programs of the University of Southern California Schools
of Medicine and Pharmacy. Research is strongly encouraged
and teaching is expected. Those interested in completing a
research project under the guidance of a grant-funded basic
scientist and to increase their knowledge of disease pathogenesis
at the molecular level have the option of participating in
the REACH program.
Types and Numbers of Appointments
A total of 40 positions are available to support the residency
and fellowship positions. Twenty-eight (28) GY-1 to GY-4 AP/CP
positions (20 funded by LAC+USCHN, 8 funded by VAGLAHS), 4
cytopathology, 2 hematopathology, 1 neuropathology and 7 surgical
pathology (5 funded by LAC+USCHN, 2 funded by USC) fellowship
positions are available. Admission to a fellowship is by application.
