Edmondson Summer Fellowship
Program
In 1969, Dr. and Mrs. Hugh A. Edmondson provided financial
support for a summer fellowship program designed to give high
school and college students interested in the medical sciences
an exposure to laboratory medicine. Since then, the program
has thrived, so much so, that Dr. Edmondson endowed the program
in order that it would continue after his death. His death
in 1986 was a huge loss to the School of Medicine, but the
Edmondson Summer Fellowships continue as a memorial to his
foresight and his enthusiastic desire to help outstanding
young people develop careers in the Health Sciences, particularly
in medical research.
Selection of students is based on degree of interest and
academic performance. Students spend several weeks working
in research or clinical laboratories under the supervision
of faculty members at the USC Keck School of Medicine. Students
are expected to take an active part in laboratory activities
and to participate in research projects. Over the years some
students have completed quite impressive projects which have
provided the stimulation for future investigation. Many students
have gone on to successful careers in medicine and related
health sciences.
In addition to this laboratory experience, a series of lectures
is offered by faculty to provide an introduction to pathology
and medical research.
Students are provided with a small stipend for the summer.
The number of students applying for these fellowships increases
each year, but the number that can be accepted is determined
by available laboratory space and funding. A serious interest
in a career in the medical sciences is a major factor in the
selection of students. The program is targeted at high school
seniors (17 or older) and freshman and sophomore college students
to give students an early exposure to the health sciences
to allow them to confirm or reverse their decision to enter
careers in the health sciences.
Since 1969, more than 1000 students have participated in
the Edmondson Program. Most have come from Los Angeles schools
but many have been from colleges around the United States.
