Medical Education
The division of Medical
Education was established in 1963 to support and encourage
the improvement of medical education by providing faculty
development; consulting on the design, implementation and
revision of educational programs; and conducting research
into effective means of delivering medical education.
The division has an active standardized patient program that provides
patients for teaching and evaluation at USC. The program conducts clinical
performance exams for all USC students matriculating into the fourth
year of medical school as well as Objective Structured Clinical Exams
for students in ICM and the clerkships. The program participates as a
member of the Southern California Consortium on Standardized patients
which was created by a grant from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.
We also maintain a unit with expertise in psychometrics, research design and statistical analysis. The unit is active in institutional research (i.e., admission history, and graduation rates) and other educational research projects.
The division offers a two-year Masters Degree program for faculty in
health professions. The program combines 3-day workshops
with distance education, faculty mentoring, and home-site projects. These
educational
programs focus on developing skills in teaching and learning,
evaluation, information management, professional development, and academic
leadership.
The division also offers two nine-month fellowship programs:
Teaching/Learning or Educational Leadership.
Among the division's accomplishments for 2001:
- Collaborated on the implementation of the new case-based curriculum for medical students;
- Launched a mentoring program for first year medical students;
- Launched an electronic course on Adult Learning Theory;
- Expanded the Educational Leadership Fellowship program to include 23 fellows and masters candidates;
- Granted master's of science in education with a specialization in medical education to 12 faculty members from the Keck School and other schools around country;
- Continued the monthly USC National Faculty Development Workshop Series on Teaching and Learning with approximately 40 attendees at each workshop.
