Student Health
Our health service for students at the USC University Park Health Center
continues to provide excellent services despite increases
of encounters by at least 10% annually. The health center
continues to be a leader in
various programs such as emergency contraception, vaccination
programs and information system technology. Our relationships
and collaborations with the Health Science Campus and Childrens
Hospital remain
strong including
those with the School of Physical Therapy, Department of
Biokinesiology and Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, Childrens
Hospital Los Angeles, Family Medicine, and
Adolescent Medicine.
Some highlights include:
- Mandatory Insurance Policy and Plan Enhancements
Finally accomplished after 10-15 years of discussion. The
plan was implemented and successfully accomplished despite
one of the firmest waivers at a major university. More
students were enrolled than
expected, and the plan appears to be in very stable status.
Enhancements were made including vision plan, smoking cessation,
allergy coverage and therapeutic
abortion coverage. In addition, a new international assistance
program was implemented and has been used successfully
several times.
- Continued increase in encounters
Medical encounters with health care providers continued to
increase by about 10% going from about 35,000 in 1995 to
60,000 this past year. Despite the increase and outdated and undersized
facility, patient
satisfaction during this time improved from the 70% level
to the 95% level.
- Modernize facility
Two new project plans were worked on and both should be completed by March 2002. Interim space in Parking Structure D has been designated and that space will be complete by May 2002. An architect has been hired and design work started for a minor renovation of our main facility for summer 2002. This will allow us to accommodate our needs until a new facility is built. In addition, a project plan for a new facility is being completed with site assessments.
- Health Assessment of USC Students
Two years have been completed and the data should be in print in spring 2002.
- Created Physical therapy CD-ROM and Video on Spine Tuning
This CD has been completed and thousands distributed to students and staff. In addition, a new CD on knee and ankles is almost completed.
- Establish new web site
Completed with online access to all insurance information.
- Medical Transport
A new, more advanced, system of ambulance transportation
for the campus and health center. Contract has been completed
and implemented with Bowers ambulance service through a
USC contract.
- Travel Clinic
A new travel clinic has been implemented and has become very popular among students and travel programs.
- Emergency Contraception
A new program for availability of emergency contraception through a health center protocol has been implemented in the USC pharmacy.
Fourth Edition of Adolescent Health Care was published in March 2002
