The Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatric Residency Training
Program at the LAC+USC Medical Center includes rotations
in General Hospital, Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH),
USC University Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Center. These
units provide an incredible experience in the care of patients
utilizing public and private hospitals.
General Hospital
has an average daily census of 600 adult patients with medical
and surgical problems. There are approximately
185,000 emergency room visits and 650,000 outpatient visits
annually. WCH is one of the largest maternal-child teaching
unit in the United States. All neonatal and pediatric inpatient
services are located within WCH including a 100 bed normal
nursery, 48 bed NICU, 70 bed pediatric inpatient unit and
the 8 bed PICU. In addition, the pediatric emergency room
is located just inside the entrance to WCH. There are 35,000
pediatric emergency room visits per year including acute
emergencies, urgent care and minor trauma. Additional experience
with major and minor trauma is provided within the trauma
unit in General Hospital.
The adult and pediatric outpatient
facilities are located adjacent to the Hospitals. We have
additional buildings for
our internationally acclaimed Violence Intervention Program
which is the referral unit for victims of abuse. Our unique
maternal-child HIV program is also located in a separate
structure, the Health Research Association Building, across
the street from the medical center. The adult HIV Program
is located in a newly constructed facility across from WCH.
Another two story building houses many of the research programs
for the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
The medical center is the referral unit for the Los Angeles
County's Northeast Healthcare Network. The Departments of
Internal Medicine and Pediatrics provide primary care, specialty
clinics and continuing education in the health centers providing
our residents with an opportunity for extensive community
outreach. Continuity Clinics for Internal Medicine are located
at the Comprehensive Health Centers.
The required adolescent
medicine rotation is supervised by the Division of Adolescent
Medicine at Childrens Hospital
Los Angeles and provides added experience with community
based services such as Job Corps and free clinics. Residents
also rotate through the mobile asthma van program which provides
preventive care and education at schools in the Los Angeles
Unified School District.
There are libraries in General Hospital,
WCH and at the Keck School of Medicine. Computer access and
reference books are
located in all patient care areas. Additional resources are
available in the large resident lounge.
The curriculum is
designed to take advantage of these excellent resources with
a sensitivity to maximizing opportunities
for learning and minimizing travel time.
More detailed information
about the hospitals is available on the USC residencies web
