The department offers graduate training leading to the Master of
Science degree. The program is designed to prepare students for
careers in biomedical research in academia and industry as well
as for teaching physiology and related fields at the community college
level.
Through course work and directed research, students develop an
integrated knowledge of physiological systems at several levels
of organization including molecular, cellular and system.
Courses in the master's and Ph.D. degree programs are similar,
which facilitates transfer of qualified students to the doctoral
program.
The Master of Science candidate has the option of either a thesis
or non-thesis course of study. The thesis option requires that a
faculty member of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics agree
to serve as the thesis advisor of the student who shall work on
an agreed-upon thesis topic.
Program Requirements Overview
- Students must complete 32 graduate level units with a minimum
grade point average of 3.0.
- Candidates must submit a written thesis if they take more than
6 research units toward the 32-unit requirement. The remaining
24 units are made up of a combination of courses offered by Physiology
or other departments in the Keck School of Medicine.
- At the end of their course work, non-thesis option students
must either pass a comprehensive oral exam, publish a peer-reviewed
research report, or submit a summary research report judged suitable
for publication by the master's committee.
Up to ten research units (PHBI 590, 594abz) can contribute to the
total unit requirement. The remaining 22 units are made up of a
combination of courses offered by Physiology or other departments
in the School of Medicine.
Required Courses
PHBI 562 (Systems and Integrative Physiology - 4 units)
PHBI 608a and 608b (Advanced Cellular, Molecular and
Systemic Physiology - 4 units each)
PM 510 (Biometry principles - 4 units)
Students must take at least two of the following:
INTD 531 (Cell Biology - 4 units)
INTD 561 (Molecular Genetics - 4 units)
INTD 571 (Biochemistry - 4 units)
Other graduate level classes with prior approval of the graduate
student advisor.
