The Department will consider applicants who satisfy all requirements for admission to the Graduate School, including an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.50 and satisfactory completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) verbal and quantitative sections (total score = 1200 or more). For the Ph.D. program in Epidemiology and Molecular Epidemiology, MCAT scores may be substituted for the GREs (total MCAT score = 30 or more). (Refer to the current University catalogue for additional Graduate School requirements). Applicants not meeting these requirements may, with approval of the Graduate School, be conditionally admitted. Regular standing is contingent upon maintaining a GPA of 3.50 in the first 12 units of graduate studies.
An MS student currently enrolled in one of the MS degree programs can be considered for the Ph.D. program provided the student has: 1) met the requirements for admission to the Ph.D. program; 2) obtained approval of the Departmental Oversight Committee; 3) demonstrated research and writing ability through the MS thesis or an equivalent; and 4) passed the Screening Examination. An MS student who meets these requirements needs to formally apply to the PhD program. A minimum of 60 units, with a maximum of 20 units of research and dissertation; passing of Screening and Qualifying Examinations; completion of dissertation; and Dissertation Defense Examination are required.
