The SCRC provides consultation services to biomedical researchers on issues related to design, database management and statistical analysis. Faculty and staff members of the SCRC actively consult with researchers at the USC Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Social Work, as well as researchers at Barlow Hospital, City of Hope National Cancer Center, St. Barnabas Hospital, Los Angeles Children's Hospital and the Shiley Eye Institute at the University of California, San Diego. Consultation is also provided to researchers in the private sector Clients include Alcon, Cell-Sci Inc., Guidant Corp., Janssen Pharmaceutical, Nutro Products and Richard-James Development Corp. For further information, contact the lead Biostatistical Consultant: Terri Kang, M.S. at tkang@usc.edu
Completed Studies:
VITRECTOMY IN MACULAR HOLE SURGERY (VMHS) TRIAL was a multicentered, randomized clinical trial evaluating the risks and benefits of vitrectomy surgery vs.observation alone in the treatment of Stage 2, 3 and 4 macular holes. Collaborative study with the Shiley Eye Institute of the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine.
ENTOPTIC PERIMETRY: A SCREENING TEST FOR CMV RETINITIS (NIH R02-EY-11961) is a study aimed at designing and evaluating a rapid, inexpensive, and sensitive non-invasive screening test which can be implemented by primary care physicians to screen large numbers of patients in the primary care setting for detection of CMV-retinitis and other infectious retinopathies.
SCOR: MOLECULAR GENETICS OF HYPERTENSION (NIH P50-HL-55005) provides assistance to basic science and clinical investigators in carrying out the research aim of identifying the genes and mechanisms responsible for associated pathophysiology in a population of Latinos with hypertension. Project performed in collaboration with the Department of Medicine at the USC School of Medicine, UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
On-Going Studies:
STUDY AND TREATMENT OF RETINOPATHY ASSOCIATED WITH AIDS (NIH 2R01 EY07366) is a prospective observational study in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease associated with AIDS. Collaborative study with the Shiley Eye Institute of the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine.
Additionally, the SCRC has received extra mural funding from the National Institutes of Health to provide consulting cores to program project grants and specialized research centers. These include:
CORE GRANT FOR VISION RESEARCH (NIH R01-EY-03040) provides assistance to basic science and clinical investigators in vision research in planning experiments, collecting and managing clinical databases, conducting statistical analysis, preparation of manuscripts, preparation of research proposals, and developing statistical/methodological research. Collaboration with the Doheny Eye Institute of the Keck School of Medicine.
GCRC: GENERAL CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER (NIH M01-RP00043) provides assistance to investigators utilizing resources of the Clinical Research Center in planning experiments, collecting and managing clinical databases, conducting statistical analysis, preparation of manuscripts, preparation of research proposals, and developing statistical/methodological research. Collaboration with the USC and CHLA General Clinical Research Centers.
TRANSDISCIPLINARY TOBACCO USE RESEARCH CENTER (TTURC): BIOSTATISTICAL CORE (P50 CA-847351) supports the design, conduct and analysis of transdisciplinary studies on the use and prevention of tobacco products in the Pacific Rim and in Wuhan, China. Collaborative study with the USC Institute for Prevention Research.
ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE RESEARCH CENTER OF CALIFORNIA (STATE OF CA 99-86140) is an Alzheimers Disease registryto enroll and track dementing illness California residents. Collaboration with the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.
ALZHEIMERS DISEASE RESEARCH CENTER (NIA P50 AG05142). The USC Alzheimer Center program supports interdisciplinary and collaborative studies on basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and of cognitive changes during AD and normal aging. The biostatistical core provides advice on data analysis and experimental design. Collaborative project with the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.
