Founded in 1976, the Cancer Registrar Training Program is designed to prepare individuals with the basic skills necessary to be employed as cancer registrars in hospitals or central registries. Students will receive instruction on cancer reporting requirements for the State of California and SEER Registries.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Perform casefinding, abstracting and follow-up
  • Comply with requirements of cancer reporting for the State of California and SEER

Eligibility

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy. Prior to acceptance into the program each student must pass a pretest. Book 3 (Medical Terminology) and Book 4 (Anatomy) of the SEER Program Self Instructional Manuals for Tumor Registrars are suggested as preparation. These manuals may be obtained from the "Order SEER Publications" section on the SEER website

Content

The ten day program offers basic cancer registry instruction using the State of California and SEER requirements. Subject matter includes:

  • Registry Files
  • Casefinding
  • Reportability
  • Collaborative Stage
  • ICD-O-3 coding
  • Abstracting basics
  • Follow-up basics
  • Confidentiality
  • CNExT database software basics

Each student fulfilling these requirements will receive a certificate of completion.
