Intra-Abdominal Fat and Risk of Disease in Adolescents
Principal Investigator: Dr. Michael I. Goran
This is an on-going longitudinal study in a cohort of 160 Caucasian and African-American children in Birmingham, Alabama. The major objectives are to examine the determinants of visceral fat accumulation during pubertal growth and to examine the relationships between temporal change in fat distribution and risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Funding is from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).
Type 2 Diabetes in Hispanic Adolescents
Principal Investigator: Dr. Michael I. Goran
This is a longitudinal, natural history study in a cohort of 250 Hispanic adolescents to examine the role of body fat, visceral fat, physical activity and insulin action and secretion in the development of type 2 diabetes during pubertal development. Hispanic children at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes (based on presence of obesity and a positive family history) are recruited and annually evaluated. Funding is from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
Effects of Resistance Training on Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Overweight Hispanic Boys
Principal Investigator: Dr. Michael I. Goran
This study examines the metabolic effects of a 16-week resistance (strength) training program on body composition, body fat distribution, muscle function and composition and insulin action and secretion in overweight Hispanic boys. Funding is from the Thrasher Research Fund.
Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents
Principal Investigator of USC subcontract: Dr. Michael I. Goran
This is a multi-center co-operative agreement with the National Institute of Diabetes andDigestive and Kidney Diseases to examine a school-based physical activity program for reducing risk factors for type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents.
