ALHAMBRA, CA, June 12, 2003 – Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati,
assistant professor of preventive medicine, was named National
Health Hero by the Midwest Latino Health Research, Training
and Policy Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago
“for leadership and achievements in health and human
services.” The nationally recognized expert on Latino
tobacco control issues was honored at the Midwest Regional
Conference on Hispanic/Latino Health and Human Services, held
in Chicago on June 5-6, 2003.
In addition to receiving her award, Baezconde-Garbanati
delivered a presentation on “Best Practices for Tobacco
Control With Latino Populations.” Her discussion of
evidence-based curricula development for Hispanic youth was
based on research conducted at USC’s Transdisciplinary
Tobacco Use Research Center.
Baezconde-Garbanati is director and principal investigator
for the Hispanic/Latino Tobacco Education Network, located
in USC’s Institute for Health Promotion & Disease
Prevention Research, and director of the Community Outreach

Research Center. She is also co-investigator of the Cancer
Information Service of California at the Norris Comprehensive

The conference drew healthcare providers, researchers, community
organizations, policymakers and others to discuss Hispanic/Latino
health and human services needs, particularly in the Midwest
states. It was organized by the Midwest Latino Health Research,
Training and Policy Center, which studies social and health
disparities of Hispanics/Latinos and other minorities and
trains minority researchers using community participatory
action research models. The center also engages in policy
work and community and provider education emerging from its
research findings.
