Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Commends Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center

ALHAMBRA, CA (February 7, 2002) - The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has officially commended the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center of the University of Southern California for its service to the community, it was announced by C. Anderson Johnson, director of the center.

The commendation cites TTURC for its “dedicated service to the affairs of the community and for the civic pride demonstrated by numerous contributions for the benefit of all the citizens of Los Angeles.” It is signed by Michael D. Antonovich, L.A. county supervisor of the Fifth District, where USC and TTURC are located.

“My TTURC colleagues and I are very proud of this commendation,” Johnson said, “especially in light of the fact that our center is only two years old. The TTURC researchers and educators plan to be making a positive impact on our Los Angeles-area community for years to come.”

Among its many research projects, the center has sent researchers into the classrooms of more than 3,000 middle school children in Los Angeles County. The goal: to design and deliver an anti-smoking curriculum that will prove more effective than others by taking into account the various ethnic and cultural backgrounds of L.A.’s students. The TTURC also provides grants to other scientists and organizations engaged in anti-tobacco-use research or community outreach programs.

About TTURC at USC

The Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center at USC is dedicated to helping young people avoid using tobacco or being exposed to environmentally transmitted smoke, especially those youths from the diverse cultural backgrounds of the Pacific Rim. It does so by conducting rigorous research upon which it develops public education programs targeted to specific audiences. The USC center is one of seven established at universities across the country to study new ways to combat tobacco use and its consequences. The centers are funded by the National Cancer Institute and National Institute on Drug Abuse, with additional monies from the Robert-Wood-Johnson Foundation.
