BAEZCONDE-GARBANATI HONORED FOR WORK
IN LATINO HEALTH
Doctoral Student Teran Also Awarded at Conference
ALHAMBRA, CA (March 26, 2003) -- Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati,
Ph.D., was honored for “her contribution toward the
advancement of Latino health through research and advocacy”
by Hispanic/Latino health organizations meeting in San Diego
earlier this month.
An expert on Latino tobacco control issues, the USC assistant
professor received the award during a two-day conference March
6 and 7 that brought together the Southwest Regional Network
Center of Redes en Acción: The National Hispanic/Latino
Cancer Network and the National Latino Council on Alcohol
and Tobacco Prevention. Redes en Acción is funded by
the National Cancer Institute through its Special Populations
Networks initiative.
In addition to receiving the award, Baezconde-Garbanati delivered
a presentation on how the activities of transnational tobacco
companies in Latin America affect immigrants in the United
States.
Baezconde-Garbanati is an assistant professor in preventive
medicine at the Keck School of Medicine; director and principal
investigator for the Hispanic/Latino Tobacco Education Network,
located in USC’s Institute for Health Promotion &
Disease Prevention Research; and director of the Community
Outreach and Education Core of the USC Transdisciplinary Tobacco
Use Research Center. She is also co-investigator of the Cancer
Information Service of California at the Norris Comprehensive
Cancer Center.
Lorena Teran, MPH, was also honored at the conference as
a Redes En Acción Newsletter Role Model for Training,
Research and Awareness for her “contribution towards
the advancement of Latino cancer and health issues through
advocacy, education and research.” Teran, a doctoral
student at USC’s Institute for Health Promotion &
Disease Prevention Research, is investigating compliance with
mammography screening guidelines among low-income Latinas.
