BAEZCONDE-GARBANATI HONORED FOR WORK IN LATINO HEALTH

Doctoral Student Teran Also Awarded at Conference

ALHAMBRA, CA (March 26, 2003) -- Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati, Ph.D., was honored for “her contribution toward the advancement of Latino health through research and advocacy” by Hispanic/Latino health organizations meeting in San Diego earlier this month.

An expert on Latino tobacco control issues, the USC assistant professor received the award during a two-day conference March 6 and 7 that brought together the Southwest Regional Network Center of Redes en Acción: The National Hispanic/Latino Cancer Network and the National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention. Redes en Acción is funded by the National Cancer Institute through its Special Populations Networks initiative.

In addition to receiving the award, Baezconde-Garbanati delivered a presentation on how the activities of transnational tobacco companies in Latin America affect immigrants in the United States.

Baezconde-Garbanati is an assistant professor in preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine; director and principal investigator for the Hispanic/Latino Tobacco Education Network, located in USC’s Institute for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Research; and director of the Community Outreach and Education Core of the USC Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center. She is also co-investigator of the Cancer Information Service of California at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Lorena Teran, MPH, was also honored at the conference as a Redes En Acción Newsletter Role Model for Training, Research and Awareness for her “contribution towards the advancement of Latino cancer and health issues through advocacy, education and research.” Teran, a doctoral student at USC’s Institute for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Research, is investigating compliance with mammography screening guidelines among low-income Latinas.
