USC PRIVATE SERVICES
1. Faculty Practice Plan
A wide range of mental health services, including psychiatric
evaluations, psychotherapy, medication evaluation and management,
and psychological testing are available through
the Faculty Practice Plan. The practice plan also provides
service to USC students, staff and their family
members. Clinicians are on panels of several managed behavioral
healthcare firms, making clinical services easily available
to patients covered by these plans.

2. USC University Hospital Inpatient Services
The USC University Hospital currently consists of 10 acute-level
beds. It is a LPS-designated facility. The phone number for

Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) are provided to patients
of all ages 24 hours per-day. Voluntary and involuntary psychiatric
patients from the community are evaluated, provided emergency
treatment, and are hospitalized or referred to appropriate
services in the community. Patients are brought in by family,
friends, police, probation officers, mobile emergency assessment
teams, and by ambulance from a number of community agencies
or community hospitals.
The majority of patients seen by staff in the LAC+USC
Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) are chronic
and severely mentally ill patients who reside in the greater
central area of Los Angeles. Several hundred patients per
month are seen in the PES, one third of whom are brought in
by various police agencies.

Psychiatric Adult Inpatient Services are located
at Ingleside Hospital and are provided by LAC+USC staff, on
two inpatient units. The average daily census is about 40
patients. Patients with all types of acute psychiatric problems
are admitted if hospitalization is warranted. Many patients
have concomitant medical problems, which require diagnostic
and consultative services provided by other medical specialty
services in the Medical Center. Acute care and treatment consists
of a structured social environment with emphasis on reality
reinforcement and behavior control, medication, individual
and group psychotherapy,
psychological assessment, occupational therapy, recreation
therapy, and psychiatric social services, including family
therapy. Discharge planning and continuing care planning are
an integral part of inpatient care and treatment.

The Psychiatric Adolescent Inpatient Service, a 10-bed unit,
is located at the Augustus
Hawkins Mental Health Center. Patients admitted to the adolescent
unit come from the LAC+USC Psychiatric Emergency Room, Women'
s and Children's Hospital, the Child/Adolescent Outpatient
Clinic, Probation Health Services (including Juvenile Hall),
and direct referrals from physicians, hospitals, and other
public and community agencies. Treatment consists of individual,
family and group therapy, a structured- therapeutic social milieu,
medication management, occupational therapy, recreation therapy,
and psychological assessment. Teachers from the local school
system provide educational evaluation and instruction.

The Psychiatric Adult Outpatient Clinic serves the mental
health needs of the surrounding communities by providing psychiatric
evaluation, psychological evaluation and testing, management, and individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy services.
Patients may be self-referred or referred for evaluation by
community agencies or from other divisions of the Medical
Center. Follow-up clinics provide aftercare services
for chronic mentally ill patients. Approximately 1000 patients
are currently receiving Adult Outpatient Clinic Services.
The clinic has bilingual clinicians and support staff
available to treat Spanish speaking patients from the local
Latino community. Case management support services are available
to help patients arrange housing and financial assistance.
Active clinical research programs in the outpatient clinic
focus on the treatment of schizophrenic disorders and anxiety
disorders.

The Psychiatric Child and Adolescent Outpatient Clinic provides
psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing, individual
and group (including family) psychotherapy with or without
medication, and behavior modification therapy for persons under
the age of 18. Approximately 400 patients are currently receiving Child and Adolescent Outpatient Services. Adolescents
with a broad range of problems are served including those
with hyperactivity, victims of abuse or violence, family-related
problems, developmental disabilities, depression, schizophrenia,
and school failure. Long-term treatment of adolescents
who attend a special educational program and are identified
as emotionally disturbed by the Los Angeles Unified School
District is also provided.

The Psychiatric Adult Consultation and Liaison Service provides
consultation upon request for any inpatient 18 years of age
or older on a non-psychiatric service at LAC+USC Medical Center.
This is an extremely active service which sees several hundred
patient visits per month, of which about 20% are new consults
and 80% are follow up contacts. Consultations generated from
health professionals include requests for diagnostic evaluation,
treatment interventions, assistance with medication and management,
and competency determinations.
Patients may be suffering from a wide range of psychiatric problems including physiological conditions that cause delirium, anxiety and depression. They may also present with a wide range of cognitive, psychotic, personality, somatoform and/or adjustment disorders including suicidal ideation with attempts.
Psychiatric interventions resolve many issues and prevent needs for further hospitalization in the General Hospital or a psychiatric hospital.

The Psychiatric Child and Adolescent Consultation & Liaison
Services provides psychiatric services to any patient who
is under the age of 18 and for treatment teams who care for
these adolescents throughout the LAC+USC Medical Center. Services are individual or family-oriented. Recommendations
for the use of psychotropic medications are also made. The
major categories of mental disorders or conditions seen on the service include mood disorders, psychotic
disorders, intoxication, suicidal behaviors, behavioral problems,
and conditions that result from medical problems.
In addition to the treatment teams, the Child and Adolescent C & L Service may interface with other children's service agencies, i.e. schools, juvenile justice system, child protective service, and other hospitals. Emergency consultations are primarily provided in the Women's and Children's Hospital's emergency room and the General Hospital's emergency room. Some children and adolescents are placed on involuntary holds, especially for severe suicidal behavior, and subsequently transferred to the psychiatric unit at Augustus Hawkins Mental Health Center or another community hospital.

The Forensic Psychiatric Services is a major resource
for Los Angeles County, as well as Southern California,
possessing an interdisciplinary team of professionals trained
and experienced in the interface of mental health and legal
issues.
Direct service activities consist of written evaluations, temporary conservatorship evaluations, and conservatorship evaluations (all of which include assessment, evaluations (and court appearances). Direct service activities also include treatment for mentally disordered offenders. Additionally, Forensic Services offers consultation to a wide variety of health and mental health professionals at the LAC+USC Medical Center. It provides consultative, educational, and informational services to community care facilities, government agencies, human services, law enforcement, the justice system, mental health agencies, and the community at large.

The Division of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry provides a range of services at the LAC+USC Medical Center. Psychological Assessment is available to medical and psychiatric in-and outpatients each year. Individual and group psychotherapy is offered to psychiatric outpatients. All services are available in Spanish. Specialty services vary from treatment of adults abused as children, to neuropsychological assessment. The Division has an active training program in psychological assessment.

The Division of Psychiatric Social Work provides an initial psychiatric assessment for patients on the Inpatient Unit, in the Psychiatric Adult Outpatient Clinic, and the Psychiatric Child & Adolescent Outpatient Clinic. The Psychiatric Social Workers provide a full range of clinical services which includes multiple treatment modalities, e.g., education for the patients, and families, psychotherapy, and follow-up information including referrals. The treatment needs and abilities of the patient are regularly reassessed in order to promote recovery and improve functioning. As appropriate and needed, Psychiatric Social Workers may function as a consultant to interdisciplinary staff, schools, probation, courts, and other agencies. Psychiatric Social Workers provide education to students of various disciplines.
