Facilities

The University of Southern California's affiliation with Los Angeles County’s Medical Center began in 1884, and today the LAC+USC Medical Center is the largest public hospital in Southern California. Psychiatric services were developed in 1913 and residency training began in 1943. A new 600-bed General Hospital is scheduled to open in the summer of 2008.

The USC Department of Psychiatry utilizes several locations for training, patient care, and research. The Department Headquarters are located in the Clinical Sciences Center on Alcazar Avenue. Clinical services are based at the LAC+USC Medical Center (the General Hospital, Psychiatric Emergency Room and Outpatient clinics). Two adult inpatient wards with 40 total beds are operated on the grounds of City of Angels Hospital (Ingleside Campus) in Rosemead, California, about 6 miles east of the LAC+USC Medical Center. A 10-bed psychiatric ward in the private USC University Hospital is also used for training. In addition, a GY-4 rotation in Community Psychiatry occurs with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, and a GY-4 rotation in Addiction Psychiatry takes place at the USC-affiliated VA Outpatient Clinic located in downtown Los Angeles, less than 2 miles from the LAC+USC Medical Center.
