Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

The four-year residency program is ACGME accredited. It is designed to provide a balance between general radiology and advanced imaging modalities. Our goal is to train excellent general radiologists with a focus of subspecialty interest that will be sought after in the job market. All of our residents choose to take a fellowship following the four years of general diagnostic training. During the four years of training, the resident becomes skilled in the interpretation of studies and performance of procedures in each specialty area. Thus, following a fellowship year for super specialization, he/she is well prepared for private practice.

Currently, ten resident positions are offered through the match. At present, there are 41 residents representing 29 different medical schools throughout the United States. Residents are employees of Los Angeles County. Because of the high volume of procedures, residents perform the invasive procedures under the supervision of fellows and staff during all four years of residency.

The first year resident spends the first six months learning the basics of chest, bone, GI, GU, ultrasonography, head CT and body CT in order to prepare him/her for call. Night call begins in January of the first year and includes rotations in the emergency room as well as additional first call for in house emergencies. There is faculty supervised call for the resident on first call & an ER resident until midnight. Senior residents take the ER call from midnight until 8am. These cases are reviewed with the faculty until 8am. Call averages every 3-4 times per month for three years and ends January of the fourth year. Vascular Interventional and Neuroradiology call schedules are arranged individually.

In addition to daily work rounds and clinical conferences with the house staff, there are ten formal departmental conferences each week.

In addition, residents spend 6 weeks at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology if they wish. The department subsidizes the expense of this rotation by $2500. One month at the Norris Cancer Center (oncology), 2 months at University Hospital (body imaging, general radiology, nuclear medicine) and 1 month of advanced neuroradiology at University Hospital. Residents are also given two months in their fourth year for electives.

Vacation and Leave

Residents are given 24 days of vacation, 5 sick days (3 personal days each year out of sick time). Residents delivering papers or exhibits at meetings are given appropriate academic leave.

Maternity and Paternity Leave

The departmental policy is based on the restrictions imposed by the American Board of Radiology. The American Board of Radiology does not permit more than six weeks away from the training year to qualify the resident to take the written and oral boards. Therefore, our department strongly encourages residents to use accumulated vacation and sick leave for maternity or paternity leave, rather than jeopardize for the boards.
