Minimally Invasive Surgery (also known as laparoscopic or videoscopic surgery) has allowed surgeons to perform the same procedures as in traditional open surgery, using small incisions (keyhole surgery) instead of large abdominal incisions.

Studies have shown major benefits to the patient in terms of reduced post operative pain, increased post operative comfort, reduced hospital stay, quicker return to normal physical activities and ultimately a quicker return to work. Improved cosmesis and reduced wound complications associated with large scars are also major advantages associated with this technique.

The USC Division of Emergency Non Trauma Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program has established itself as the center of excellence for laparoscopic surgery in Southern California. More than 3,000 procedures from simple gallbladder operations and hernias to the most sophisticated operations such as splenectomies, gastric operations, removal of intra-abdominal cysts and intestinal surgeries are performed annually using predominantly laparoscopic techniques with minimal complications and virtually no mortality.

Another objective of the division is to offer laparoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal emergencies such as appendicitis, cholecystitis or other complicated abdominal problems using laparoscopic techniques when appropriate.

The service is composed of 3 surgical units, on call 24 hours a day. The division is headed by Namir Katkhouda, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery. Cedric Bremner, M.D., Professor of Clinical Surgery and Peter Crookes, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery are in charge of a surgical unit each.

An active and strong research program addressing various issues in the field of laparoscopic surgeries allows improved procedures and technology offered to the patients. The division is also well positioned to embrace technological changes in the years to come with reliance on the use of virtual reality, telemedicine, lasers and robotics.
