Dr. Susan Downey
Susan E. Downey, M.D. has been on faculty at the University of Southern California, in the Division of Plastic Surgery since 1989. She went to medical school at Columbia University in New York City, and then did her general surgical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She completed a plastic surgery residency at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, and then came to Los Angeles to do a fellowship in pediatric plastic surgery at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles.
Dr. Downey is on staff at USC University Hospital, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Encino-Tarzana Medical Center and is the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Kenneth Norris Cancer Center. Dr. Downey’s practice encompasses a wide range of plastic surgery, from pediatric plastic surgery to all types of breast surgery, including breast reconstruction following cancer, and cosmetic surgery. She practices a full range of cosmetic surgery including ultrasonic liposuction and C02 laser resurfacing. She has a special interest in body contouring surgery (abdominoplasty, arm lifts, thigh lifts) especially following weight loss.
Dr. Downey is known for her volunteer work with international organizations doing cleft lip and cleft palate surgery in third world countries. Most recently, she has been to Vietnam, Russia and Morocco with Operation Smile. Dr. Downey donates both her time and her reconstructive surgery skills to these children worldwide.
She has appeared on television and has also been mentioned in print. She is listed among the best doctors of Los Angeles, as published in Los Angeles Magazine and also has been quoted in several pieces on plastic surgery for many other publications, as well as in the Los Angeles Times. She performed a TRAM flap reconstruction that was taped for television broadcast on the Learning Channel, and has most recently published book chapters and editorials on "Plastic Surgery for Common Breast Problems" and "Adolescent Breast Problems." Dr. Downey is also involved in a study about the sociologic effects of adolescent deformities.
