Dr. Randy Sherman
Randy Sherman, M.D. serves as Professor and Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as the American Board of Surgery and holds the Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand. He specializes in reconstructive microneurovascular surgery, aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, hand surgery, cosmetic surgery, and the care of difficult wound problems.
Dr. Sherman received his M.D. from the University of Missouri - Columbia in 1977. He underwent general surgical training at the University of California at San Francisco and the State University of New York at Syracuse. His Plastic Surgery training was completed at the University of Southern California in 1985 after which he joined the faculty in the Departments of Surgery, Orthopedics, and Neurosurgery.
Dr. Sherman is a staff member of numerous hospitals including 1) the USC University Hospital, 2) the Kenneth Norris Jr. Comprehensive Cancer Center, 3) the Doheny Eye Institute, 4) the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, and 5) the Orthopedic Hospital. He is an active member of 14 national specialty societies including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, American Association of Hand Surgery, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, American Society for the Peripheral Nerve, and the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and he holds leadership positions in many of them. He has authored numerous articles, chapters, and books in his specialty and has lectured nationally and abroad.
He is the founder of the Southern California Chapter of Operation Smile {http://www.surgery.usc.edu/opsmile}, a charitable organization that sends plastic surgeons as well as health professionals all over the world to perform reconstructive surgery on children with congenital and acquired deformities. Dr. Sherman has led Operation Smile missions to India, Thailand China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Columbia, Russia, the Middle East, Ghana, Kenya, Brazil, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Mexico. In 1999 he participated in Operation Smile’s World Journey of Hope that circled the globe in a flying hospital bringing reconstructive surgical services to over 5,000 children.
Dr. Sherman is a commercial pilot and flight instructor rated in multi-engine aircraft, floatplanes, helicopters, and sailplanes. He serves as an FAA designated Aviation Medical Examiner and is a volunteer pilot and member of the Board of Directors for the Santa Monica Museum of Flying. His avocations include scuba diving, skiing, white water rafting, aerial and underwater photography, and jazz piano.
