Trauma Outreach Program
The Trauma Outreach Program is the prevention arm of the trauma program centered in the Division of Trauma and Critical Care of the Division of Trauma & Critical Care of the University of Southern California and the LAC+USC Trauma Center. This program seeks to educate youth at risk as well as health care and educational professionals regarding the prevention of Trauma and urban violence and its impact in the community.
The program consists of 4 phases with the major component being reaching out into the community. It is directed by Juan A. Asensio, MD, FACS. To date it has reached over 9,000 students and over 200 health care professionals. It has generated media coverage in newspapers, radio and television and has been featured in 9 teledocumentaries.
The Trauma Outreach program has actively interacted and participated with many different organizations including the LAPD, Board of Education, Juvenile Hall-Probation Department and Attorney General's Office. In addition it participates at USC University wide Multidisciplinary committee which directs its focus in research and prevention of urban violence.
