Fellowship

The Division of Trauma/Critical Care of the Division of Trauma & Critical Care, University of Southern California, offers two residency ("fellowship") positions for one year in Surgical Critical Care, beginning on the first of July each year. The residency is accredited by the ACGME and qualifies graduates for the examination for "Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care" given by the American Board of Surgery.

The program has rotations both at the Los Angeles County+University of Southern California Medical Center and the USC University Hospital. The Medical Center is a 1200 bed acute care facility which is a Level I (ACS verified) Trauma Center with 7000 trauma admissions each year. The Surgical Critical Care Unit is a modern, fully computerized 16-bed facility. Approximately 1000 patients are admitted to the unit each year. The majority of patients are victims of trauma, but also include major general surgical, burn, vascular, urological, orthopedic, neurosurgical, otolaryngological, cardiothoracic and pediatric cases. The University Hospital is the faculty practice hospital for the University of Southern California and is located on the same Health Sciences Campus. It is a 250-bed “quaternary” care facility that does a large volume of complex surgical procedures including multi-organ transplantation.

The fellowship is a one-year appointment and will provide advanced clinical training in surgical critical care. The resident will be involved in the use of several advanced modalities such as gastric tonometry, continuous jugular bulb Svo2, high-frequency ventilation, independent lung ventilation, continuous hemofiltration/dialysis, immune modulation, inhaled nitric oxide and others. The educational program includes journal clubs, conferences, and a daily teaching round in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The Critical Care resident works most closely with the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care faculty, house staff medical students but also consults and manages general surgical and surgical specialty patients with their faculty, house staff and student teams. Up to 6 weeks of the Surgical Critical Care Residents’ time will be spent running one of the three Trauma Teams at the Medical Center with its very active clinical load including operative care. Active participation in clinical research is encouraged. Successful candidates will be considered for an additional year of trauma experience as junior faculty member as an Assistant Unit Chief.

Applicants should have completed a surgical residency training program in the United States or Canada and be eligible to take the American Board of Surgery qualifying examination. California licensure must be obtained prior to starting the program, but is not required for application. There are seven attendings with Critical Care Credentials.

Interested applicants should contact the Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Residency: Thomas V.
