What does it take to become a great physician in the 21st century? At the Keck School of Medicine of USC, admission committee members believe that many different paths prepare students for careers in medicine. Each individuals combination of training, experience and goals help make him or her a unique candidate. At the same time, certain qualities and accomplishments give admissions committee members confidence that a student will succeed in their medical training and future practice.
The Admissions Office of the Keck School of Medicine seeks to admit students dedicated to academic excellence, who show a solid understanding of the natural sciences; they look for those who can connect with others, with excellent communication skills and a well-developed sense of compassion. In todays medical world, doctors must be flexible, willing to work with a team of professionals, committed to life-long learning and able to enter into the shifting technological and biomedical backdrop against which patient care takes place. Medical training is a challenging and rewarding endeavor for those with the right stuff.
Beyond the Keck Schools innovative M.D. training program, the School offers a number of combined M.D. programs to better train young physicians pursuing careers in advanced medical research, academia, health care management, public health and policy, and clinical research. These programs require acceptance to the M.D. program, although some combined programs have additional application procedures and admissions requirements.
The B.A./M.D. and Early Decision programs provide additional options for those interested in earning medical degrees.
