From Anesthesiology to Trauma Care, clinical faculty of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California direct a broad range of accredited residency and fellowship training programs at the LAC+USC Medical Center and other nearby institutions. Guided by senior physician educators, medical residents undergo rigorous professional training designed to prepare them for independent medical practice and board certification.
Many applicants to Keck School resident training programs are attracted by the opportunity to train at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Centerone of the countrys largest teaching hospitals. Resident training also greatly benefits from training at USC-affiliated state-of-the-art private hospitals such as USC University Hospital and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. Resident training is further enhanced by the chance to work side-by-side with some of the nation's leading scientists and physicians in clinical care and research.
The majority of Keck School training programs admits new MD graduates through the national matching program and centralized application service administered by the American Association of Medical Colleges. Program length depends on the medical specialty chosen: Family practice, internal medicine and pediatrics training lasts 3 years, while surgery requires 5 years. Those wishing to work in a highly specialized field such as cardiology after completing an internal medicine residency or adolescent medicine, which is part of pediatrics are required to complete fellowships of 1 to 3 years of additional training.
The USC Office of Graduate Medical Education provides oversight and support for the ACGME accredited graduate medical education programs sponsored by the LAC+USC Medical Center and directed by the faculty of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. One of the pediatrics residencies is administered separately by Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
