VISA INFORMATION FOR POSTGRADUATE TRAINING APPLICANTS

Applicants for postgraduate training (GY1-GY7) should be aware of the following visa information for County paid postgraduate physicians.

J-1 Visa:

Those applicants needing to obtain or renew your visa should be aware that the only visa status that is acceptable by the LAC+USC Medical Center for appointment as a postgraduate physician is the J-1 visa.

If you are an Exchange Visitor, it is your personal responsibility to obtain and maintain a lawful J-1 visa prior to the start of training and continuously throughout the period of postgraduate training. Failure to have a valid visa and work authorization by the first day of your training is grounds for dismissal from your training program. If your J-1 visa lapses during your training, your training will be interrupted.

LAC+USC Medical Center will sponsor resident physicians on the J-1 Visa. The Medical Center sponsors the initial application and applications for continuing a J-1 Visa for promotions. It is the postgraduate physician’s responsibility to obtain the necessary documentation to have a valid J-1 visa and work authorization upon inception of training. This documentation is required before the physician will be allowed to start training at the LAC+USC Medical Center. Failure to have a valid J-1 visa and work authorization by the first day of training is grounds for dismissal from your training program.

The ECFMG maintains a Website where the initial application or application for continuation of the J-1 visa may be accessed.

The completed initial application must be submitted for processing to the ECFMG six to eight weeks prior to the beginning of training. Physicians wishing to continue on their J-1 visa must submit a completed renewal application to ECFMG six to eight weeks prior to the expiration of the present visa. Physicians who fail to have a valid visa and work authorization are placed on a leave of absence without pay and their training interrupted until the visa is renewed. This extends the physicians training period.

H-1B Visa:

The LAC+USC Medical Center does NOT sponsor applications for H-1B visas.

O-1 Visa:

Under no circumstance does the LAC+USC Medical Center sponsor postgraduate physicians on an O-1 visa.
