First in Patient Care
The Keck School of Medicine of USC has received national recognition for its outstanding physicians, excellent patient care programs and as a leader in clinical research. Through its 17 clinical departments and dozens of specialties, the Keck School of Medicine offers treatment and diagnostic services for a wide range of common and rare diseases. Some recent accomplishments of Keck School physicians include:
- Keck School surgeons are the first in Southern California to perform robotic heart surgerya procedure that significantly reduces pain and recovery time for patients.
- Keck surgeon Vaughn Starnes, M.D., gains national attention for the transplant program at the USC University Hospital with his pioneering work, including performing the first double lobar living-related lung transplant.
- USC/Norris offers women diagnosed with cervical cancer a surgical alternative to a hysterectomy, which allows them to retain their fertility.
- The USC Department of Surgery's laparoscopic program pioneered the use of laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, in operations to treat ulcers.
- USC surgeons led by Robert Rick Selby, M.D., are leaders in replacement of the liver and other abdominal organs, as demonstrated by a first-of-its-kind bloodless liver transplant performed at USC University Hospital.
- USC University Hospital is the only facility in California, and only the fifth in the world, to offer a Model C Gamma Knifea device that uses radiation to treat inoperable tumors without surgery.
- Orthopedists at the Keck School are among the leaders in exploring the use of porcine implant patches for healing ligament, tendon and muscular problems in humans.
- Diabetes expert Anne Peters, M.D., was the only doctor to tell champion swimmer Gary Hall that he could continue competing after he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Creating a personalized program and even attending the Olympics with him, Peters helped Hall to four more medals, including two gold.
- USC University Hospital neurosurgeons were the first in California to use a revolutionary procedure, which injects plastic adhesive into the spine to reduce pain and increase mobility in osteoporosis patients.
- The Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center HIV/AIDS clinic was one of the first AIDS clinics, and remains one of the largest and most respecte in the nation.
- Keck School neurosurgeons have remained national leaders in stereotactic radiosurgery for more than two decades.
