Retina Institue and Eye Concepts
The Doheny Retina Institute is part of the USC-affiliated
Doheny Eye Institute. The Retina Institute, led by internationally
recognized faculty of the Keck School of Medicine, is dedicated
to relieving the suffering of patients with diseases of the
retina by quickly bringing new treatments to the marketplace.
The groups primary research interests are macular degeneration
and diabetic retinopathy, two of the most common causes of
vision loss in the United States. Both diseases attack the
retina, and finding new ways to halt this destruction and
restore the retina to healthand hopefully to return
lost sightare the core goals of the Institute faculty.
Faculty work to better understand these diseases through research
and to design and test new treatments for the disease.
The Retina Institute is also the home of the Eye Concepts, where bioengineers work
in close collaboration with ophthalmologists and other vision
researchers to develop new surgical innovations and devices.
One such device, the retinal prosthesis (which is also called
the retinal implant or eye chip) is now in clinical trials
at the Doheny Eye Institute.
