Robotic Surgery in First Clinical Trials at USC

Keck School cardiothoracic surgeons are among the first in the nation to work with the innovative da Vinci robot in clinical trials of the high-tech, minimally invasive surgical system. The da Vinci Surgical System, a product of Intuitive Surgical (based in Mountain View, Calif.), teams the honed skills of a surgeon with computer-enhanced robotic technology.

Already, Keck surgeons have performed a number of groundbreaking heart and chest surgeries with the robotic system, a tool that may help revolutionize these and other types of surgical procedures in the future. USC is one of several sites in the United States in a Food and Drug Administration-approved trial to evaluate the use of the da Vinci Surgical System in specific surgeries.

Read more about USC firsts, including the heart surgery and the chest tumor removal surgery done at the USC University Hospital.
