Affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine, the Saban Research
Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is the largest
and most productive pediatric research center in the western
United States. It ranks fifth in the nation in federal funding
for pediatric research among centers at stand-alone pediatric
facilities. In 2000, the Institute received $24.9 million
in extramural funding for biomedical research, $19.4 million
of which was federal funding, a 10 percent increase over 1999
federal funding.
Childrens Hospitals renown as a pediatric hospital comes in part from its combination of an independent clinical center, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, with an on-campus research facility. This link offers the ability within a single institution to rapidly move new discoveries from the research laboratories to the bedside of children suffering from complex and life-threatening diseases.
In addition, CHLA maintains a strong affiliation with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. CHLA physicians and scientists hold faculty positions at the Keck School.
The Research Institute has become a national leader in pediatric biomedical research, most notably for work in cancer care, gene transfer, stem cell and organ transplantation, and diabetes.
