Overview

Pasadena is located just 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles and the Keck School of Medicine, and is easily accessed from the campus using surface streets when freeway traffic is at its worst. Pasadena is situated at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, boasting a Mediterranean-like climate, tree-lined streets, unique neighborhoods, a lively “Old Town,” and a bevy of historical and cultural attractions.

Landmarks

Pasadena is probably most famous for its Annual Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl, yet the city is also home to numerous other attractions. The world-renowned California Institute of Technology, which manages the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and whose scientists frequently collaborate with those of the Keck School, is located there. Other prominent venues include the art collection of the Norton Simon Museum, the theatrical offerings of the Pasadena Playhouse (founded in 1917), and the historic Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens.

The downtown urban village known as “Old Town” Pasadena is home to a multitude of dining, shopping, and nightlife experiences. From fast food to fine dining, Italian to Thai food, your palette will be satisfied in Pasadena. The city offers a wide variety of options when it comes to shopping, spanning from high-end retail stores like Coach and Saks Fifth Avenue, to the more trendy shops like Armani Exchange and Guess?, to a number of vintage, antique and second-hand stores. A night out in Pasadena might consist of a trip to the theatre or cinema, a nightcap at a coffee house, or an outing to one of the distinctive bars or nightclubs.

Housing

Pasadena is known for beautiful homes and beautiful neighborhoods. The architecture of many of the homes in the city is of such historical styles as Spanish Colonial Revival and Craftsman Bungalow. Pasadena is now in its fourth decade of citywide planning and development to balance commercial growth with housing opportunities to achieve the goal of a better quality of life and a stronger economy.

School Systems

Every student residing in Pasadena is guaranteed a spot reserved at their local school, yet through the city's open enrollment, students may apply to attend any school in the district. This provides families with an array of educational options. There are a number of after-school recreational programs, magnet schools, and programs for advanced learning within the Pasadena Unified School District. There are also more than 30 private schools in Pasadena offering pre-kindergarten through high school education.
