ZNI Network Upgrade

Thursday, June 19th - after 5 pm.

In collaboration with the Provost and the Committee on Information Services (CIS), ITS has begun an ongoing university-wide network infrastructure upgrade. The Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, ZNI building is scheduled to have its network infrastructure upgraded on the evening of Thursday, June 19th, 2008.

Work will begin after 5 p.m. and should be complete by midnight.

What will be upgraded?
The network switches throughout the ZNI building will be replaced with 1 GB capable switches. If your computer has a GB network card, it will upgrade to the faster speed.

How Does This Affect Me?
There will be some network downtime as devices are disconnected from the old network switches and connected to the new network switches. Servers located in the ZNI building will have the highest priority and be moved to the new network ahead of any other devices.

What devices are affected?
  • Network attached computers  and servers (Mac, Windows, Linux)
  • Network attached printers
  • Network attached copy machines
  • any other devices that are attached to the network (eg., lab equipment, security devices)

Will anything change on my computer?

All network devices in ZNI will need to be registered and configured with a new IP address.   ITS and Keck IT tech support services have conducted an inventory of network devices in ZNI and will be registering the devices for the new network prior to the cutover.  If a computer is configured to use DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol), it will get the correct IP address automatically when it reconnects to the network.  Manually addressed IP addresses will need to be changed manually.

How can I verify that my computer is included in the ZNI inventory list?

  1. Identify your IP address and hostname by visiting:   http://keck.usc.edu/whoami
If your hostname begins with “dynamic…”, then you will not be affected by the network upgrade and require no further action.
  2. Next verify that your computer is listed on our list:  http://keck.usc.edu/at/zni
  3. Contact us at kecktech@usc.edu  to add missing devices.
