Breman Student International Travel Grant
The goal of this grant is to give medical and other health science students at KSOM an opportunity to deepen their appreciation of the health problems of developing countries.  A clinical, field, or laboratory research experience in a foreign country may encourage the student to consider a career in international health and public service.

• Deadline: December 8 (3rd&4th years) and March 16 (1st years)
• $2,500 - $5,000
• Program duration: Travel in a foreign country must be at least 8 weeks

Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars/Fellows
This intensive, year-long clinical research training experience affords US health professional graduate students an opportunity to participate in mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research facilities in developing countries.

• Deadline: December 5, 2008 – start early as application is intensive (ie recommendation letters)
• Fellowship stipend ($25,000), roundtrip travel provided, insurance or insurance reimbursement ($4,000 for 12 months of coverage) provided, educational materials provided
• Program duration: 1 year
• No provision for loan forgiveness

O.C. Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health
This fellowship allows 3rd and 4th year medical students to learn about public health in an international setting.  In a developing nation, students work on a priority health problem with CDC staff and other national and international health agencies.

• Deadline: TBA in January 2009 (last year’s February 28, 2008) – start early as application is intensive (ie recommendation letters)
• Only 6 – 12 applicants receive $3,000 each
• Fellowships available with no available funding
• Program duration: 6 – 12 weeks (varies depending on particular fellowship)
• Only 3rd and 4th years eligible

AWHS Overseas Assistance Grants - temporarily suspended
This grant allows 2nd, 3rd, or 4th medical students to continue their medical education abroad in disadvantaged areas. 

• Deadline: rolling – should apply at least 3 months prior to departure
• Up to $1,500 for financial assistance
• Program duration: 6 weeks – 1 year
• Only 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years eligible
• Must be  AMWA members
• Program must be sponsored by KSOM

Fulbright
This scholarship is the “largest international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.”

  •  at least 2 months before the campus or IIE deadline (for full research and study grants or grants in the creative and performing arts)
  • At least 6 weeks before the campus or IIE deadline (for teaching assistantships or travel grants)
  • if currently enrolled in USC, must apply through Fullbright Program Advisor (FPA) on the UPC campus

The Luce Scholars Program
This scholarship offers American citizens with no previous experience in Asia or Asian Studies an opportunity to learn about Asian culture through emersion.  This program sets up the 45 scholarship recipients with an internship/experience related to each recipient’s area of professional focus.  The primary goal of this program is not to promote professional development but rather to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

• Deadline: nominations must be submitted by December
  • Applications must be submitted via USC

• Program duration: late August – mid July of following year (~11months)
• Written and oral report required at end of program
• Requirements:
  • American citizenship
  • At  least a bachelor’s degree
  • No more than 29 years old on September 1 of the year they enter the program
  • Significant experience in Asia or Asian studies excludes students from this program
  • Language study prior to departure to Asia (subsidized by program)
• All expenses covered (including medical and travel insurance)
