Student National Medical Association

Student National Medical AssociationSNMA is the nation's oldest and largest student-run organization focused on the concerns of medical students of color and addressing the healthcare needs of minority communities. Established in 1963, by students at Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and the National Medical Association, SNMA boasts 30 years of committed service to the community. Its goal is to produce an increasing number of sensitive physicians to serve minority and indigent communities. The USC School of Medicine chapter is within Region I which includes seven undergraduate and twelve medical schools spanning five states. Here at USC we have worked hard to exemplify the goals of SNMA by sponsoring a number of events for our members, for the health sciences campus, and for our local communities. Some of these programs include:

  • Formal and informal mentoring sessions amongst current medical students and alumni.
  • Youth Science Enrichment Program at Shenendoah Elementary school involving interactive presentations with 5th graders exposing them to basic science and health information while peaking their interest in careers in medicine as well as education in general.
  • Participation in regional and national conferences
  • Volunteer work at nearby clinics
  • Black History Month Celebration complete with food, jazz, African dancers, and a gospel choir.
