Clinician-Scientist Mentoring Dinner

The purpose of this event is to bring medical students together with faculty clinician-scientists in a social setting. The goal is to promote the development of professional and personal relationships for the students that will encourage and foster their pursuit of an academic career.

Invited student participants:
  • MD/PhD students
  • Medical students taking a 5th year for research
  • NIH-funded practicing clinicians on the faculty

This event made its debut on February 27, 2009. It was held at Town & Gown on the University Park Campus. The evening began with a reception at 5:30 pm that included scientific posters presented by the students.  A seated dinner followed at 6:30 pm. Over dessert, a lecture was delivered by Dr. Neil Kaplowitz, a distinguished Keck School professor and Director of the USC Center for Liver Diseases. Thirty faculty members and thirty-two students attended.

Dean’s Research Forum

The purpose of this event is to provide medical students with an overview of opportunities for summer research and the 5th year research option. The event is structured to facilitate personal interaction with faculty members who might serve as sponsors for research projects in the short term and as mentors in the long term.

Invited student participants:
  • 1st and 2nd year medical students
  • 3rd year medical students interested in the 5th year research option

This event made its debut on March 2, 2009. It was held from 4:00 to 6:30 pm in the Aresty Auditorium.  The formal program was approximately one hour, including 5 minute presentations by a panel of senior researchers in various areas of science. The speakers were asked to present exciting possibilities for projects within their own research programs and/or the academic units they lead. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr. Henri Ford, Vice Dean for Medical Education. The event concluded with a reception in the Aresty Foyer.
