PIBBS

Coordinated admissions for the Ph.D. granting educational programs at the Keck School of Medicine are provided through the Programs in Biomedical & Biological Sciences (PIBBS), which serves as the entryway to 15 participating Ph.D. programs based in five different schools at USC. The goal is to attract the most outstanding students by giving them a wide variety of educational options. PIBBS comprises the following programs:

Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs

Genetic, Molecular & Cellular Biology
Systems Biology & Disease
Neurosciences

Keck School of Medicine

Biostatistics
Statistical Genetics & Genetic Epidemiology

Coordinated management of Ph.D. education through PIBBS ensures that students receive a rigorous, individually tailored educational experience to train them as internationally competitive research scientists. Students accepted into the program carry out several laboratory rotations during their first year of study. Students may choose their laboratory rotations from more than 100 USC faculty members who are conducting internationally recognized research in a diverse array of biological disciplines. After successfully completing laboratory rotations, each student then identifies a professor with whom he/she will do his/her thesis work. At that time, the student also is enrolled as a second year student in the Ph.D. program of his/her choice.

Department of Preventive Medicine Programs

PIBBS offers the advantage of many choices for the student who would like to gain experience towards developing a focus for further study. For those students who are already committed to a specific educational path, applications may also be made directly to the programs based within the schools. This admissions opportunity is available for the following programs administered by the Department of Preventive Medicine:

Biostatistics
Biostatistics & Epidemiology
Epidemiology
Molecular Epidemiology
Statistical Genetics & Genetic Epidemiology
Health Behavior Research

Please visit the Preventive Medicine departmental website to view information about admissions to the biostatistics and epidemiology programs and the Division of Health Behavior Research for information about admissions to the health behavior research program.
