Degree Programs - Masters, Undergraduate and Professional Degree Programs

In addition to the doctorate, the Keck School provides a variety of other educational programs in the health sciences to serve the needs of the nation.

Masters Programs

Biomedical Laboratory Sciences – Graduate level training, leading to the M.S. degree is offered by the following Keck School laboratory basic science departments:

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Cell & Neurobiology
Molecular Immunology & Microbiology
Pathology
Physiology & Biophysics

The primary objectives of these programs are to provide the necessary theoretical preparation for biomedical careers and to expose students to biomedical science-related research activities culminating with the Master of Science degree.

The programs aim to train students in preparation for:

  • Further doctoral study
  • Advanced biochemical research positions in industry and academia
  • Teaching positions at the community college level

The courses taken by Master students are identical to the classes required for the doctoral degree obtained through the PIBBS program. At the completion of the M.S. degree, students can apply to transfer into the Ph.D. program. The program is open to students who want to obtain more extensive research experience, update their theoretical preparation, or who want to test their disposition toward academic training without committing to a five-year agenda leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Additional information on the programs and admissions is available on the departmental web sites.

Biostatistics and Epidemiology – Through its Division of Biostatistics, the Department of Preventive Medicine offers programs leading to the Master of Science degree in:

Biostatistics
Epidemiology
Molecular Epidemiology

The two-year programs prepare students for careers in research, teaching at the community college level and the pursuit of doctoral or other advanced degrees. The molecular epidemiology program is a joint effort with the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Bachelors Programs

Health Promotion & Disease Prevention Studies – Offered through the Division of Health Behavior of the Department of Preventive Medicine, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Studies is an ideal major for students interested in pursuing careers in public health, health promotion and disease prevention and for preparing students for advanced study in the health professions.

Professional Degree Programs

Primary Care Physician Assistant Program – Through the Department of Family Medicine, the Keck School of Medicine offers a Primary Care Physician Assistant Program that aims to train outstanding clinicians to be professional leaders in the rapidly changing medical environments of the 21st century. The program involves a variety of medical care settings with diverse patient populations, and coursework integrates several areas including public health and epidemiology and health care administration. It is a 33-month, graduate curriculum and is administered by the Department of Family Medicine.

Public Health – Offered through the Division of Health Behavior of the Department of Preventive Medicine, the Master of Public Health (MPH) is a professional program for front-line public health workers. The program is intended to prepare graduates to aid in the creation of healthy communities. This involves a variety of settings and numerous communities, with a strict focus on disease prevention and health promotion among diverse populations. The program begins with five core classes, followed by an area of related, concentrated study selected by the student.

Global Medicine – Offered jointly by the Department of Preventive Medicine and the Office of Medical Education, the Master of Science in Global Medicine answers the urgent, worldwide need for professional training in concepts of global medicine. Students in this program will gain the strong medical science foundation needed to analyze, understand and solve worldwide health issues.

Program study emphasizes methods used in addressing global diseases and finding innovative new solutions for preventing global health crises. In addition to the basic concepts of global medicine, students will delve into specific issues including malaria, tuberculosis, tropical diseases, HIV/AIDS, and maternal and child health.

Academic Medicine – The Division of Medical Education in the Office of Medical Education offers a degree granting program leading to the Master in Academic Medicine.
