Despite a stiff competitive environment for external funding and a slow-to-recover national economy, the amount of Keck School of Medicine research grant funding has greatly increased in recent years. Most notably, during fiscal year (FY) 2011, Keck School received $248.3 million in grant awards—a 14 percent increase from FY 2010 and a 43 percent increase over the previous four fiscal years (the largest four-year increase over the past 13 years). Other recent highlights include: Keck School plus its affiliates received $312.2 million in grant awards during FY 2011, representing a 13 percent increase from FY 2010; Keck School affiliate Children’s Hospital Los Angeles received $10 million more in grant awards in FY 2011 than in FY 2010; NIH awards comprised 73 percent of the total grants awarded in FY 2011 or $169.1 million. | New USC Digital Repository Center |
The USC Vice President for Research, Randolph Hall, announced that the USC Libraries, USC Information Technology Services and USC Shoah Foundation Institute have launched a new center to supply Digital Repository functions to research efforts and digital collections at USC. Expanding the systems employed to digitize, catalog, digitally preserve and provide access to the 8 petaybyte collection of video in the USC Shoah Foundation Institute archives, the USC community can now process collections of all media types and sizes for the incremental costs of adding the content to the USC Digital Repository. As an additional service, high speed disk storage is available for rent at $70/terabyte/month from the USC Digital Repository enterprise disk arrays with no limit in volume of storage or access. Another service also offered is digital preservation storage where projects can store files for 20 years on digital tape archives with 100% bit accuracy at a onetime cost of $1,000/Terabyte. This system will make sure all files are on fresh media and stay exactly the same with no loss for this 20 year period. If you are interested in these services, please contact the USC Digital Repository Operations Manager, Linda Truong, at 213-740-9263 or for more information visit the USC Digital Repository website.

| NSF Partnership for International Research & Education, Due Aug 12 |
NSF has announced their Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) competition. USC has one slot for preliminary proposals. Each school can nominate one candidate. Interested candidates should send CVs/biosketch and a 1-2 page research summary to Gigi Petrovich by August 12.
This PIRE competition will focus exclusively on the area of Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES). The SEES effort focuses on interdisciplinary topics that will advance sustainability science, engineering and education as an integrative approach to the challenges of adapting to environmental, social, and cultural changes associated with growth and development of human populations, and attaining a sustainable energy future. Encouraged is research of global sustainability issues including, but not limited to, climate change, clean energy, food security, biodiversity, and communication networks. Note PIRE projects must include collaboration with foreign research partners and international research experiences for students to promote a diverse internationally competitive science and engineering workforce. Additionally, NSF expects PIRE projects to involve groups traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering at all levels (faculty, students and postdoctoral researchers).
