Postdoc Profile

gigiPatricia Dranchak, PhD
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Tricia arrived at USC April 1, 2006.  She completed her PhD at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.  She is mentored by Dr. Joseph Hacia at the Institute for Genetic Medicine.  Tricia lives in Pasadena with her two dogs.

What research projects are you working on?

My work focuses primarily on genetic and genomic analyses of human neurodegenerative disorders that result from inherited defects in lipid metabolism.  I am currently working on evaluating the effectiveness of candidate drugs to treat patients with peroxisome biogenesis disorders.

What brought you here to USC and what do you like about being here?

In 2006, I was looking for a postdoc position where I could expand my knowledge and skills in human genetics as well as incorporate my experience in comparative genetics and genomics.   I found a position in Dr. Hacia’s lab that offered me an opportunity to learn a number of new techniques in human genetics, while working on a comparative genomics side project.  It was a great fit and the lab group was collaborative and welcoming.  Dr. Hacia’s lab at USC has continued to provide me an opportunity to learn the newest techniques and technologies in the field, as well as form collaborations across the country and internationally.

What are your plans for your future?

I am currently finishing a couple different projects and am working to write up several papers.  I will begin my official job search this winter.  I would like to gain experience in the pharmaceutical industry and will pursue a job in with a private company.

How do you enjoy living in Southern California?

After growing up in upstate New York and doing my doctoral research in Minnesota, I definitely enjoy the warm weather of Southern California.  When I am not in the lab, I love to be outdoors with my dogs or riding my horse.  I love to go hiking in the mountains in the morning and play at the beach in the afternoon.  Southern California has a lot to offer in the way of outdoor activities as well as entertainment.
