The Office of Research Advancement provides a course in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) annually.
This one-week course satisfies NIH ethics training requirements and is open to all postdoctoral fellows, research associates, clinical fellows and graduate students conducting research. All PIBBS graduate students must complete the class (INTD-500) prior to advancing to candidacy. In addition, trainees on NIH training grants are required by NIH to take the course. Postdoctoral fellows enrolled in the course will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.
The class is held twice each summer, Monday-Friday from 9-10:30 AM. Each morning begins with a short lecture followed by a 10 min video. During the next hour, discussion sessions are held as 'break-out groups' of 6-8 students with a faculty 'mentor' leading the discussion. Homework is assigned daily.
Lecture and discussion topics include misconduct and fraud in science, data acquisition and management, collaborative research, responsible authorship, conflicts of interest, animal welfare, human subjects, and professionalism in scientific relationships.
