Research

The Keck School of Medicine has set the course for its future and is on its way to becoming a top medical school. Key to that goal is a major increase in campus research space.

The Office of Development is raising funds for new research buildings, along with the programs and new faculty members who will be recruited to fill those new buildings. Following is an overview of the research buildings either currently or soon-to-be under construction:

Harlyne J. Norris Cancer Research Tower

To accelerate their quest to slow and even cure cancer, scientists and physicians at the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center have been given a powerful new tool: a 190,000 square foot, eight-story building dedicated solely to cancer research. Made possible by a $15 million lead gift from the Norris Foundation, the building is named for Harlyne J. Norris, executive director of the Norris Foundation, USC trustee and board member of the Kenneth T. Norris, Jr. Cancer Hospital.

Here, gifts are needed to fund laboratories and recruit scientists dedicated to cancer research. Naming Opportunities are available at http://uscsom.convio.net/NorrisResearchTower. General donation can be made at http://uscsom.convio.net/CancerResearchTower. Please contact Tina Pakfar at norrisdev@usc.edu or (323) 865-0700 for more information.

Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute

With a dream of eradicating degenerative neurological diseases, Los Angeles businessman Selim K. Zilkha pledged $20 million to complete construction of the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute. The scientists who work in this 125,000 square-foot, six-floor facility strive to understand the workings of the human brain and to unravel the mysteries of the many neurological and psychiatric disorders that plague millions of people worldwide.

Naming gifts are still sought to fund floors, laboratories and other common spaces such as the building’s conference rooms, where scientists share ideas and work to develop new areas for investigation. For more information, please contact William Loadvine at wloadvin@usc.edu or (323) 442-1192.

Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine
and Stem Cell Research

Currently under construction, the Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research is expected to be completed in 2010. Once completed, the five-story, 80,000 square-foot facility, will house basic and clinical researchers working collaboratively on stem cell research in three categories: basic and discovery stem cell research, preclinical research and preclinical development, and clinical research. The Center will provide a hub for the development of regenerative medicine in the Los Angeles region through opportunities for training and collaboration with its partner institutions in the Southern California Stem Cell Scientific Collaboration.
