Art & Collections

Art, Collections and other personal property may be donated, but the University must approve the gift prior to the transfer.

The university accepts gifts of art and other types of collections if the gift will serve an educational purpose. If approved and accepted, the donor will be entitled to a full value charitable deduction for income tax purposes. The donor must obtain and pay for a valid appraisal from a qualified appraiser to obtain the deduction. Normally, the university will sell the art, so that the proceeds will benefit the Keck School and the program that the donor designates. However, if the donor desires that the art be retained for a period of years, with university approval, the art will likely be retained.

Collections of stamps, coins, etc. may not be accepted and may not be advisable gifts. This is because it may be difficult to obtain a full value deduction. If an educational use cannot be determined, the donor of such gifts would be limited to a charitable deduction of only the cost.
