Dean Stephen Ryan Steps Down
After 13 Years
|

|
After serving 13 years - longer than any dean in the history of USC's medical school - Stephen J. Ryan announced his resignation as dean of the Keck School of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Medical Care, effective June 30, 2004.
He will return full time to ophthalmology as president of the USC-affiliated Doheny Eye Institute, where he has an active research lab, and serves as the Grace and Emery Beardsley Professor of Ophthalmology.
In his letter to faculty, Ryan expressed his appreciation to everyone affiliated with the Keck School. "I have greatly enjoyed working with the dedicated faculty, staff, students, and supporters of the Keck School of Medicine over these past 13 years," he wrote.
During his tenure as dean, the Keck School of Medicine
underwent a remarkable transformation. A few of the highlights
are:
- Overall research funding increased from $72 million in FY93 to $149 million in FY02.
- The average grade point average of entering medical students improved from 3.47 in FY92 to 3.61 in FY03 and cumulative MCAT scores went from 29.2 in FY92 to 32.4 in FY03.
- Campus expansion commenced with more than 585,000 square feet of new research space including the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, the Harlyne J. Norris Cancer Research Tower and Research Building 3, along with new clinical buildings-USC's Healthcare Consultation Center II and the USC University Hospital Norris Tower, being built by Tenet Healthcare. USC's partner, Los Angeles County, is on target for its 600-bed, $820 million replacement facility slated to open in 2007.

FACULTY UPDATE
Clive R. Taylor, M.D., Ph.D.

Clive R. Taylor, Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, and professor and chair of the Department of Pathology, has been at USC since 1976 - a career spanning four decades at the medical school. Taylor joined the USC Department of Pathology in 1976. Prior to that, the Littleport, England, native received his medical training at Oxford University and lectured in pathology at Oxford. He served with the Oxfordshire Health Authority before coming to USC on a Medical Research Council Traveling Fellowship in Cancer Research.
He has served as chair of the Department of Pathology and
director of laboratories at the LAC+USC Medical Center since
1984. In addition, he is President of University Pathology
Associates and has recently completed terms as President
of the Biological Stain Commission and President of the
Association of Pathology Chairs. Taylor teaches pathology
to first, second and third year students and conducts resident
pathology teaching, postgraduate pathology lectures, laboratories
and examinations.
The research in Dr. Taylor's laboratory has focused on the
identification of markers of different tumor types, development
of new antibodies, and the standardization of this technology
for general application by all surgical pathologists. More
recently, the focus has changed somewhat from the identification
of particular tumor types to the development of markers
that establish prognosis early in the course of a tumor,
as opposed to waiting for evidence of tumor spread. Dr.
Taylor's clinical interests include diagnostic immunopathology,
leukemia, lymphoma, cancer diagnosis and treatment, and
anatomic and clinical pathology. In 2002, Dr. Taylor was
awarded the Philip Levine Award of the American Society
of Clinical Pathology for his outstanding research in immunohematology.
Taylor was appointed Senior Associate Dean in 1997. At the
time of his appointment, he stated, "I'm looking forward
to working with the students, faculty and my colleagues
at the department chair level towards being the best we
can be in medical education. I see the primary role of the
position as the advocate for the medical students."
