Enrolling and Waiving

Each year the student insurance office, both at the main campus and the health science campus, receives hundreds of phone calls and emails regarding the waiver and enrollment policies and deadlines. In an effort to proactively provide information about these important procedures, we hope this letter will help explain in detail what is required at USC in regards to health insurance.

Who's Automatically Enrolled?

Domestic students enrolled in 6 units or more (regardless of full or part-time status), all international students enrolled in any number of units, all PhD students enrolled in any number of units and all students enrolled on the health science campus are automatically enrolled in and charged for the USC Student Health Insurance Plan, Aetna Student Health. The charge is added to your student financial account (your fee bill) with the description "Health Insurance Mandatory". If you want to keep the Aetna Student Health Insurance, you must enroll yourself by the deadline date. Visit and click on "Enroll/Request to Waive: Student Health Insurance Plan" and follow the instructions to enroll. Deadline date to enroll is September 12, 2014.

Can I request a waiver of this insurance premium charge?

Enrollment in the USC student health insurance plan can only be removed if the student has document proof of comparable insurance that meets all USC waiver criteria. Waiver criteria includes but is not limited to the following:

Individual policies may meet some but not all of these requirements. Please check these benefits before requesting a waiver. All waiver requirements must be met in order to receive a credit of the insurance premium on your feel bill.

My insurance meets all waiver criteria - how do I request a waiver?

To request a waiver, wait at least 5-7 business days after registering for classes and after June 20, 2014. Visit and click on "Enroll/Request to Waive: Student Health Insurance Plan" and follow the instructions to waive out Deadline date to waive out is September 12, 2014. All waivers must be submitted through the online request system. Do not drop off the worksheet or your insurance information to the health center, finance office, registrar, or cashier's office. A waiver request must be submitted at the beginning of EVERY ACADEMIC YEAR in the fall. The deadline to submit your request to enroll or waive out is September 12, 2014. Waiver requests received after this deadline will not be approved. This request will be for the entire academic year. NEW WAIVERS MUST BE REQUESTED AGAIN NEXT FALL, BY THE DEADLINE DATE.
