FAQs

How long does it take to get an appointment at Eric Cohen Student Health Center (ECSHC)?

Almost all appointments can be made for the same week. Primary Care usually has same day appointments available. Most of the specialists can be seen the same week, but at times it may take up to 2 weeks. At this time, we do not have any specialist with more than a 2 week waiting period.

What if I am not able to seen when the specialist is at the ECSHC?

If your schedule does not match the schedule of our specialist, you may request a referral to an outside specialist. In order to obtain the referral, you have to be seen by one of the physicians at the ECSHC. You can call our appointment line at 323-442-5631 and set up an appointment at your convenience with a primary care physician.

Why can’t I refer myself to a specialist?

For the specialists that we offer at the ECSHC you can make an appointment without a referral. Each of our specialists is here for about a half day each week. For more detailed information on the schedule of Gynecology, Dermatology, Psychiatry and Counseling Services, please call the ECSHC.

If you need to be seen by a specialist that we do not have at the ECSHC and you carry the USC Anthem/Blue Cross Student Health Insurance, you will need a referral. The USC Anthem/Blue Cross Student Health Insurance works as an HMO. This means that you must see your primary physician and receive a referral prior to going to any other doctor. Anthem/Blue Cross only recognizes a physician from the ECSHC as a possible primary physician. If you do not get a referral from one of the physicians at the ECSHC, your visit with the specialist will not be covered. If you see another primary physician instead of a physician at the ECSHC, your visit will not be covered and you will have a $600.00 fine as well.

How long is a referral good for?

A referral is good for the academic year. You must see the specialist within 90 days from the date of the referral. If you cannot get into see the specialist within the 90 days, you need to inform the ECSHC and we will assist with getting you in to see the specialist or give you another referral.

Each referral is only good for that Academic year. If you have a chronic condition, and will need to continue to see a specialist, a new referral is needed EVERY YEAR. Please call the ECSHC to obtain this referral in August when you start the fall semester.
