Neil Kaplowitz , MD

Professor of Medicine
Chief, Division of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases
USC Associates/Thomas H. Brem Chair in Medicine
Veronica P. Budnick Chair in Liver Disease

Research Interests

My research interests are in mechanisms of liver cell death and the factors which influence the choice between nervous and apoptosis. This couples well with my clinical interest in pathogenisis, prevention and treatment of drug, toxin and alcohol induced liver injury. My second interest is in the membreane transport of glutathione in apual and borolateral membrane of the hepatoyl as well as brainmendothelial cells and lens epithelia. The former involves the charaitenyation of brown (oatp1, mrp2) and yet to be discovered GSH transporters and the latter involves the identification and charaitenyation of sodium glutathionl-transporters. The transport of glutathinol is pivotalin the interorgan homeostasis of glutathinol and cysteine.
