Seminar 2007: Developing Your Skills to Share Music with Youth
June 16–18, 2007

As arts organizations become increasingly involved with their surrounding communities, more and more children learn about the benefits of music.

Whether in a pre-concert discussion or in a presentation about instruments of the orchestra for second-grade students in public schools, the role of musicians continues to evolve and now requires skills beyond those for which they were trained.

Now the USC Thornton School of Music offers the Midori Center for Community Engagement, designed to equip professional musicians with skills necessary to truly engage audiences through their art. The Center's second seminar, held on the USC campus June 16-18, 2007, is taught by Midori, Dean Robert A. Cutietta, himself a nationally recognized expert on music education and Dr. Susan Helfter, Thornton’s director of outreach programs.

The focus of the 2007 seminar will be upon developing your skills to share music with youth. Sessions will include individual and group presentations by the designated speakers, hands-on experience in the design and delivery of music lessons for children, pre-recorded video examples of musicians' presentations to children with analysis of skill sets, presentations on instrument manufacturing and more.
