The Gregor Piatigorsky Seminar for Cellists
Gregor Piatigorsky was a member of the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music from 1962 until his death in 1976. The Piatigorsky Seminar for Cellists is designed and conducted in the spirit of self-examination, study and openness to the new, traits that Piatigorsky was known for enhancing in his students. Limited to an enrollment of twelve, the Seminar brings together distinguished artists and teachers and exceptionally gifted young cellists to study and perform a varied repertoire and to discuss artistic, technical and professional issues of significance to cellists.
Among the respected cellists who have served on past faculties are:
- Lynn Harrell
- Yo-Yo Ma
- Janos Starker
- Eleonore Schoenfeld
- Steven Isserlis
- Joel Krosnick and
- Nathaniel Rosen
Participants take part in performances, demonstrations of techniques and pedagogical approaches and explorations of new concepts, repertoire and professional opportunities during the biannual seminar.
The twentieth biannual Gregor Piatigorsky Seminar for Cellists will be held in the summer of 2009.
