2011-12 Year in Review

The Thornton Alumni Association had a great year, full of exciting opportunities for alumni and students to interact and reconnect with one another. We also launched a Facebook page this year to provide more ways for alumni to stay in touch with the School and fellow alumni. The list below includes some of the highlights from the past year.

Night at the Hollywood Bowl with the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Alumni Club
September 9, 2011 at the Hollywood Bowl
Alumni from USC Thornton and the USC BevHo Alumni Club joined together for a pre-concert picnic, which included lots of great food, opportunities to mingle, and a visit from the Trojan Marching Band! Alumni then sat together at the Hollywood Bowl performance of the Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks. Photos from the event are available here.

Third Annual Thornton Alumni Concert
October 23, 2011 at Alfred Newman Recital Hall on the USC University Park Campus
This year, the recital highlighted dynamic graduates including Bear McCreary, The Midnight Winds, The Greg Reitan Trio, Derik Nelson, Celeigh Chapman, and Tigran Martikyan. The music included country/folk, jazz, pop, film scoring, and contemporary classical genres, with an emphasis on Trojan composers and writers. A reception will followed the concert in Herklotz Plaza. Music Industry Career Presentation and Tour of Alfred Music Publishing
November 4 and 18, 2011
In an effort to reach out to students at Thornton, representatives from the USC Thornton Alumni Association facilitated a career presentation for students in the Music Industry Program that included topics such as networking, resumes, elevator speeches, interviews, and thank you notes. About 50 students attend, and some of them also attended a tour of Alfred Music Publishing facilitated by our alumni later in the month.

Pop Music Showcases
December 3, 2011 and April 19, 2012
The Thornton Alumni Association hosted two nights with the popular music student performances, and offered alumni an opportunity to see the talented students of USC Thornton’s newest degree program.

Music Industry Mixer
February 1, 2012 at McKay’s Lounge
In partnership with the student-run Music Industry Connection club, USC Thornton Alumni hosted a reception for music industry alumni and offered students and alumni the opportunity to network with one another and some faculty members from the program. Nearly 50 students attended and joined with dozens of alumni to talk about the music industry and enjoy a night out together.

March 24, 2012

Career Panel
April 4, 2012 in Taper Hall on the USC University Park Campus
More than 100 alumni and students nearing graduation attended this event, which was titled: Launching Your Career: an event providing access to the music profession’s most successful. The evening featured a panel discussion, moderated by KUSC's Gail Eichenthal, featuring professionals from many areas of the music profession including music performance, non-profit, legal and business affairs, publishing, recording industry, arts promotion and more. After the panel, there was a mixer, which gave alumni the opportunity to directly talk with these accomplished professionals. Photos of the event are available here.
