New Music for Orchestra

New Music for Orchestra is an annual concert that features the best new orchestral works by students from within the Thornton Composition Department. Winning works are selected by a committee of the composition faculty, and performed by the USC Thornton Symphony Orchestra in the spring semester.

3333/4331/Timp+3 perc/Hp/Pf(Celesta)/Strings
  • usual woodwind doublings okay
  • any soloists, electronics, chorus must be provided by the composer. Soloists should be affiliated with USC and approved by the Composition Department.
  • extensive percussion requirements, e.g. 8 toms, 4 bass drums, 6 gongs, etc., may make the piece ineligible for logistical reasons
  • works composed while at USC will be given preference, though non-USC composed works are eligible
