Overview
The PhD degree in historical musicology, offered by the Department of Musicology, prepares their recipients for careers in musical research, writing and university teaching. Through seminars and lectures students in musicology explore the breadth of music, including topics in music of the world, popular music, performance practices, criticism, jazz and film, theory and musical analysis. Students also select courses in the arts and letters outside of music, and they participate in the outstanding performance organizations of the USC Thornton School of Music, including the renowned USC Thornton Early Music Ensemble. Students often read papers at international conferences and symposia in the discipline, and they run a Musicology Forum that brings the field's top scholars to campus for guest lectures.

The Musicology Department invites applicants for the 2013-14 academic year to the PhD program. Applicants will be considered for USC's Provost Fellowship, which provides four years of funding (two with full fellowship, two with teaching assistantships), with full tuition remission, health insurance, and an annual stipend currently set at $30,000. Additional funding opportunities are also available. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Musicology Department chair well before the December 1st deadline for further information.

Curriculum Requirements
The PhD in historical musicology requires a minimum of 60 units beyond the bachelor's degree and consists of course work in music history; electives in history, language, literature or arts other than music; and general electives. The program culminates with a dissertation.
